India-Pakistan Conflict Escalates: Operation Sindoor and Border Clashes Intensify

Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a series of military actions and retaliatory measures.

 Operation Sindoor: Indian Missile Strikes

On May 6, 2025, India launched "Operation Sindoor," a missile strike targeting nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir. The Indian Ministry of Defence described the operation as a precision attack on terrorist infrastructure linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. The strikes were reportedly in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which resulted in 26 civilian deaths in Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistan confirmed the missile strikes but emphasized that no Pakistani military installations were targeted. However, Pakistani authorities reported civilian casualties, including a child killed and two adults injured in Bahawalpur .

 Border Clashes and Military Engagements

The missile strikes have been accompanied by intensified border skirmishes. Pakistan claims to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and a drone, while also capturing an Indian brigade headquarters. In contrast, India reports the destruction of several Pakistani UAVs and the capture of a Pakistan Ranger. Both nations have suffered casualties, with Pakistan reporting at least eight civilian deaths and 22 injuries, and India reporting 17 militants killed and 60 injured .

Water Dispute: Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty

In a significant move, India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan on April 23, 2025, following the Pahalgam attack. India has since accelerated the construction of hydroelectric projects on the Chenab River, leading to a reported 90% reduction in water flow into Pakistan. Pakistan has warned that any disruption to the river's flow could be considered an act of war, with potential nuclear repercussions

 Civil Defense Measures: Operation Abhyaas

In response to the escalating conflict, India is set to conduct a nationwide civil defense drill on May 7, 2025, known as "Operation Abhyaas." This exercise will span 244 districts and include activities such as air-raid siren tests, blackout simulations, and evacuation drills. Major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai will participate, aiming to bolster civilian preparedness amid the ongoing tensions

 International Reactions

The international community has expressed concern over the escalating conflict. The United Nations has called for maximum restraint and diplomatic resolution. Iran has offered to mediate, while Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States have issued travel advisories for the region. China has also urged both nations to de-escalate tensions

As the situation develops, both India and Pakistan remain on high alert, with the international community closely monitoring the potential for further escalation.
